What's it like to work with me individually?
Our first meeting starts with an assessment (don't worry it's not a test). I'll ask you a smattering of questions about yourself and your life (some general and some a bit deeper). I'll also ask about the embarrassing things you are doing, so I can get an idea of what it’s like to be you at your worst (I'm not judgy and I promise not to make you feel like a weirdo). If you aren't comfortable telling me all the details yet, that's totally cool too. We've got time.
Once I get a decent picture of your story, I'll encourage you to identify exactly what parts of that story you’d like to change. Most importantly - how will you know when you are done with therapy?
I’m a pretty fun gal, so I can see why you might want to see me indefinitely, but that’s probably not going to benefit you as much as recovery and actually moving on with your life. The day you show up to session with nothing to talk about is a good day in my book.
So how is seeing me going to fix your eating disorder?
It's not. I can't fix your eating disorder. I'm fresh out of magic beans. Recovery is 100% yours for the taking and only you have the power to take it.
My job is to shine a light in the darkness so you can see the path. Maybe even find the door or point you toward the key.
Even that sounds a bit dreamy. I won't bullshit you. The reality is, the path is littered with bees and the door is probably jammed shut and you're going to need to learn to whittle a stick to pry it open. The key is often lost in pile of 100 other keys that look exactly like it.
But I'll be there.
I'll shine the light.
I'll teach you to whittle the stick.
I'll wait patiently while you try all the keys.
